They're changing guard at Buckingham Palace....

While I was getting ready for work this morning I was thinking about how fun school day mornings were when I was a little girl.  Get dressed (in a dress or skirt, because pants hadn't been allowed yet at my school), eat breakfast, and then....watch Mr. Green Jeans, Dancing Bear and my beloved Captain Kangaroo on the television set!  I always got so excited when Captain talked about England and showed a clip of the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace.  A song played in the background, set to the lyrics by A.A. Milne from his book When We Were Very Young, and every time I heard it I dreamt about watching the guards myself someday.  So you can imagine my delight when many years later I found myself standing right in front of the gates with my Mother, watching it all unfold just as the Captain had promised.  Fast forward to this past summer, when my son was preparing for his trip to London and I excitedly told him to be sure to catch the changing of the guard.  He did, and enjoyed it, but of course he hadn't had the Captain and Mr. Green Jeans to prepare the way....

  1. Oh, such memories! I, too, watched Captain Kangaroo every morning. I was totally in love with every character on that show. I wanted my very own Bunny Rabbit.

I was lucky enough to see the Changing of the Guard on one of my visits to England.
